Lugang Old Street
Lugang Township 鹿港 literally means "Deer Harbor". This name comes from a time when wild deer roamed the area and the town was actually on the coast. Today, however, runoff and silt has moved the coast quite a distance away and there are almost no deer to be seen.
In Lukang, there are many narrow and winding lanes and they are collectively called “Nine Turns Lane. Nine represents a numerous number in Chinese culture. “Nine Turns” means many turns. Jinsheng Lane is the most well-preserved one in Nine Turns Lane.
The Lugang of today is still a bustling little place. The preserved architecture and alleyways have attracted visitors to the town for many years and it has become a popular destination to see bits and pieces of old Taiwan and enjoy some traditional foods.
Visiting Lugang now consists of a few attractions. The Old Street is a collection of streets and alleyways full of vendors and food set among old Taiwanese houses and storefronts.
Vendors are always eager to let you try their merchandise.
As you wander around the alleys of Lugang old street, you will notice upkept and refinished old Taiwanese style houses.
The houses and alleys give you a sense of life in old Taiwan.
Today, many of the houses are still used as residences and some have been turned into shops or restaurants for visitors.
Wandering the alleys of Lugang is fun and there are great angles for photographers to capture unique images.
The famous "Half Well" was actually a private well located in the foyer of a household. The Wang family, who owned the well, decided to open half the well to the alley so the paswerby and less fortunate could use it as well. The generosity is a virtue which strengthened the relations among neighborhood.

As you walk among the old valleys, you will found 1 of this make a penny machine. It required you to turn to your choice of designated penny, insert 3 TWD10, it is quite tricky, you need to put in 2 pieces of coins and place it in the hole then only can put the last coin in. Twist it in and start turning the big wheel until the penny come out. Each machine came in 4 design. And don't forget to put a top coat over it, so it can last long and not rust.
If you are feeling hot on that day, you can find this milk ice vendor. It is said that its a handmade milk ice. Just the thing to cool you down in a hot day. Each cost TWD10.
