Glass Temple & Gallery
Lukang is the second oldest town in Taiwan. There are many old temples in this town, you will most likely see the famous, old Tian Hou Gong Mazu Temple, and some are more than 300 years old.
On the outskirts of Lugang, about a 20 minute drive, we can find a temple that are made out of glass
There is this huge tree located just behind the glass temple.
In order to trade business, the ancestors of Lukang had to cross Taiwan Strait from Mainland China. It's not a easy job in that time due to immature seamanship. The early residents believed they were protected by Mazu (Heavenly Holy Mother). Once they became rich, they would build a temple to worship Mazu. That's why there are so many Mazu Temples around Lukang.
Now, there is even a Mazu temple, Glass Temple, is made of glasses. Except pillars, most of the structure is transparant, such as doornail, door gods, Mazu statue, offerings, wall, and roof. It is more stunning at night when the lights are on. It is located outskirts of Lugang, about a 20 minutes drive.
This is the big pond you will see once you step into this temple. You may see there are a lot of coins inside and it is where people try to throw their coins into a bowl that written some auspicious words. Different bowl has a different auspicious word on it. And they are all written in chinese.
There is this bell located high above from the floor beside the main entrance.
You can see the floor outside of the temple contains the mixture of sand, small stones and glass stones.
Beside the Glass Temple is Taiwan Glass Gallery which is also worth a visit. There are many glass art-crafts. You will see some amazing stuff made of glass, such as god's palanquin, lotuses, and some fruits which located on the first floor. On the ground floor, you should go into the Golden Tunnel, which is a space surrounding by glasses and mirrors.
This bridge are made of glass surface which you need to get across to the other side of the gallery.
There are some small decorations beneath each section of the bridge.
You can see a lot of this glass art crafts display in a glass door cabinets.
There is another "glass temple" in Malaysia, called Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple. It's embellished by a mosaic of 300,000 pieces glass, but not like the Glass Temple in Lukang is "made of" glasses.
